From millions of years, earth worms play an important role in providing sufficient nutrients to trees and plants. These earth worms eat organic wastes and soil and produces manure as thier excretory product. This natural process of the earth worms has been artificially adopted in the past 10-20 years to produce the quality manure. This artificial process is known as vermiculture. The manure that is produced by this process is called vermicompost. Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Vermicompost is beneficial for soil in many ways:

• It improves the physical structure of the soil .
• It improves the biological properties of the soil (enrichment of micro-organisms, addition of plant hormones such as auxins and gibberellic acid , and addition of enzymes , such as phosphates , cellulase , etc.).
• It attracts deep-burrowing earthworms already present in the soil.
• It improves water holding capacity
• It enhances germination, plant growth, and crop yield
• It improves root growth and structure

VERMICULTURE AT JAI BHARAT NURSERY

The nursery has uses new surface bed method to produce vermicompost. There are 10 beds to produce the vermicompost from the organic waste of the nursery. This vermicompost is available for sale in the nursery with the brand name “SANJIVINI”.
